The device sends ultrasonic pulses into the material and calculates the time it takes for the waves to reflect from the opposite surface. This time interval is converted into wall thickness. The penetrant seeps into surface cracks or discontinuities. After a set dwell time, excess penetrant is removed, and a developer is applied. The developer draws the penetrant back to the surface, making flaws visible.
