Our unique technical solution for repairing the root of a hard-to-access weld on the spent fuel storage pool pipeline was noticed by VÚZ and is the focus of a detailed article in the professional journal Zváranie-Svařování, Volume 1 – 2025.
Here’s the Story Behind It
The biggest challenge in this repair was the location of the defective weld root inside the pipeline, which made it difficult to prepare the weld surfaces to the required specifications mechanically. The technical solution required a creative approach, and our experts decided to develop a custom-made, single-purpose tool head for grinding the weld area. We tested the setup internally, and it proved to be highly precise and suitable for use in the demanding conditions of a nuclear power plant.
For the welding itself, we used a special device from the company Polysoude, specializing in producing orbital welding equipment. After mutual consultation, Polysoude manufactured a custom extension (“Lanza”) for the existing SPX compact welding head. The most suitable welding method was tungsten inert gas arc welding (141 – TIG).
Months of technical preparation, manufacturing, and testing brought the desired result. We successfully repaired the weld.
